Social Service and Youth Empowerment Training Program (Project We Care)

Peoples received $153,000 from Jefferson Parish Workforce Investment Board to implement "Project We Care," which serves high school drop out and teen parents.  The program offered job readiness preparation, computer training, and job placement.  GED tutoring was offered as a supportive component for our participants'.  The grant did not require this, however we are firm believer that it increase our youth opportunity to succeed it they attained a GED.

Housing Programs (HOME and LHFA funded programs) completed projects

  • Gentry Development – Peoples developed two-story, four bedrooms, and two and a half bathrooms single-family dwelling units with an attached garage.  Each home was sold for $79, 000.00 with up to $ 25,000.00 in soft seconds. (A grant that is forgiven in 10 years if the family stay in the home)  This project was funded with HOME funds and Mississippi River Bank provided the interim construction loan.

  • Bridge City - Peoples developed three bedrooms; two bathrooms with parking pad single-family dwelling units and sold them for $69,000.00 with up to $20,000.00 soft seconds.  This project was funded with HOME funds only.

  • Shrewsbury - Peoples developed three bedrooms, two bathrooms with parking pad single-family dwelling units and sold them for $69,000.00 with up to $20,000.00 soft seconds.  This project was funded with HOME funds and an interim construction loan from Bank-One.

  • Westminster - Canary Homes, LLC, Woodmere-Robin Homes, LLC, These developments were implemented with a for-profit developer. Low-income housing tax credits were used to construct single-family three bedrooms, and four-bedroom two bathrooms/ and a half, with attached garage for families with credit challenges.  Participants enter into a 15 years contract; each payment is applied to the non-interest mortgage, at the end of that period each family may purchase the home for the cost of the remaining mortgage balance.  This concept allows our families an opportunity to build wealth, the equity can be used to pay for college, pay off debts, or acquire that dream home.  Homeownership training, financial planning, budgeting and occupational training refer services are some of the services provided for the occupants of these units. 

  • Harvey Development - The Harvey project consist of 24 single-family town homes. Each unit has three bedrooms, two baths and a parking pad. The units were sold for $88,000.00 with up to $50,000.00 soft seconds.

    This project is our first since Hurricane Katrina. Construction began on August 27, 2007 and was completed on December 21, 2007. There was a delay in closing due to utility challenges. However, all homes are schedule for closing, with the first eight occurring in the Week of January 14, 2008.
